Hello!
My name's Imran. This July I'll be running the London 10k to raise money for:
The Eve Appeal (http://www.eveappeal.org.uk).
To find out that you or that someone close to you has been diagnosed with cancer is obviously devastating news.
The Eve Appeal focuses on funding research to improve the prevention, detection, treatment and care of all five gynaecological cancers. The term 'gynaecological cancer' refers to the five cancers that start in the female reproductive system. Alongside raising awareness, The Eve Appeal helps fund the world-class research programme at the Department of Women's Cancer based at University College London (UCL).
My aunt was recently diagnosed with cancer and this is my way of showing support and raising awareness. With the exception of cervical cancer, most gynaecological cancers are found in women over the age of 50. However, the incidence of some of the other gynaecological cancers in younger women has been rising and gynaecological cancer can affect any woman. I'm running this race for the women I care about.
This is the first time I've done anything like this so any support (however big or small) is very welcome. 10k might not sound far to the more athletic of my friends, but I'm not a great runner and it will certainly be a challenge for me.
If you are interested in following my progress, I will try to update you on how my training is going :).
Why you might want to support me
For her:
Whether you do it for your mother, sister, aunt, girlfriend, friend, daughter, niece, or any other special woman/girl in your life, I do hope that you will consider supporting this very worthy cause.
More about the charity and gynaecological cancers
The Eve Appeal focuses on funding research research to improve the prevention, detection, treatment and care of all five gynaecological cancers:
-Cervical
-Ovarian
-Vaginal
-Vulval
-Womb (also known as cancer of the uterus, endometrial cancer, or uterine cancer).
Globally there are around one million new cases a year - just 200,000 fewer than the number diagnosed with breast cancer. And of these new cases, over 850,000 women die. In the UK 18,000 women are diagnosed annually and some 7,500 die. Despite these grim statistics, gynaecological cancers are neither a well-profiled nor a well-funded cause.
