Story
Illuminet is holding a litter picking event, as part of their annual Make a Difference Day initiative, on the 7th May!
To help build a better future, Illuminet wants to do an environmental power hour of litter picking, with all donations going to Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT).
What is this event?
1 hour of litter picking.
100 people.
10,000 pieces of litter picked collectively.
1,000 UK native trees sponsored and planted in partnership with YDMT.
Why litter picking?
The most common litter found on land include; fast food packaging, cigarette butts, used drink bottles,
chewing gum wrappers, broken electrical equipment parts, toys, broken glass,
food scraps or green wastes.
It takes;
- Cigarette butts 18 months to 20 years to decompose
- Monofilament fishing line 600 years to decompose
- Plastic bags 10 years to 1,000 years to decompose
- Foam plastic cups 50 years to decompose
- Plastic Straws 200 years to decompose
- Wet Wipes 100 years to decompose
- 6 pack holder 450 years to decompose
- Tin cans 50 years to decompose
- Nylon fishing nets 40 years to decompose
- Plastic bottles 450 years to decompose
- Chewing gum 5 years to 1,000 years to decompose
We often forget that litter not only has an environmental impact, but also an economic and legal one! So, to help restore our land and oceans, Illuminet is challenging you to do an hour of litter picking with us at Holes Bay on the 7th May at 2pm – 3pm.
Please do not forget to sponsor us for the MaDD Trash Bash & Tree Spree event. All donations will be going to Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust, an Illuminet partnered charity who are dedicated to supporting and looking after the spectacular landscapes of the Yorkshire Dales and surrounding areas. Tree planting is perhaps what the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust is most well-known for. Since they first started out in 1996 YDMT has helped to plant around 1.5 million broadleaf trees, creating native woodlands of all shapes and sizes throughout the Yorkshire Dales and Nidderdale.
Why Trees?
- Trees absorb carbon and help combat climate change.
- They create new habitats for wildlife and support biodiversity.
- They create natural spaces where people can relax and enjoy themselves and separate their work life with leisure to help improve mental health.
- Trees protect the landscape against flooding and erosion and even improve water quality.
- Trees restore part of our natural landscape that has been lost due to deforestation.
Why should you get involved?
Helping the environment is important. We are seeing the impact of climate change and pollution daily in our news today. So, it is so important to help and act together to improve the planet we live on.
