I’m Kai. I’m 17 years old. Director of BeHeard: The Young Voice, Youth Board Member for Beyond, Young Persons Advisor for the NIHR: ARC; and most importantly, a suicide survivor. On the 17th of February, 2020, I took an attempt on my life - at only the age of 15, I believed that leaving my whole life behind was worth it if it meant that I didn’t have to live in pain. 13 months later, I was made aware of the suicide of a local 17 year old lad called Jamie McKitten - a young lad who left his family behind as a result of mental illness and trauma. 

This is the society we live in. A society where young men are made to face their issues alone; where they don’t know how to access help, or are ridiculed for doing so - and this is no fault of their own. The systems that surround us today simply do not accommodate for the ever growing, life changing, undeclared mental health crisis that is responsible for the suicide of hundreds of young and innocent children.

A few months after the suicide of young Jamie McKitten, I began working with my local Muay Thai Gym - Northern Kings - now, several months later, we are working on an amazing video documentary which will highlight the importance of physical health, and the impact it has on the mental health of young men. Most importantly, through the eyes of young men themselves.
