Story
On 12th December 2019, as part of a 5 man crew, I will attempt to row 5,000km across the Atlantic Ocean from the Canary Islands to Antigua. Very few people have rowed an ocean, in fact more people have been into space. It is regarded as one of the toughest challenges in the world. The journey will take in the region of 40 days, we will row 24 hours per day for the duration, with around 1.5 million oar strokes, experiencing 50 foot waves, enduring sleep deprivation, enormous physical and mental stress, solitude and significant weight loss.
In October 2016, my mum (aged only 69 yrs at the time) was diagnosed with Alzhiemer’s. Her condition deteriorated rapidly following diagnosis to such an extent that by the summer of 2018 she was unable to take care of herself and unfortunately by October 2018 she had to go into full time care.
It has been heartbreaking to witness the rapid decline in my mum’s mental health, especially considering her relatively young age and healthy physical condition. On a positive note, it has been incredible to witness the love and care my mother receives from her carers and the community. Unfortunately there is no cure for dementia but scientists are working hard to find one.
I am raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society, which is the only UK charity that campaigns for change and funds research to find a cure and supports people living with dementia today https://www.alzheimers.org.uk
Please support my journey and more importantly support all those who suffer with this horrendous disease by making a small donation.
Many thanks
Ian
