Story

End to End Challenge for Severn Hospice.

During the winter months I am taking on the following End to End challenge - Lands End to John O’Groats - 874 miles in the form of a virtual run, jog, hike or walk!

https://endtoend.run/lands-end-to-john-o-groats-virtual-run/

The reason for this which some of you are aware is I helped to care for my terminally ill Mum Eunice,  who was diagnosed with type 4 brain cancer during lockdown 1. Sadly, Mum passed away in mid November. We have been a close knit unit all of my life, coming from a sports mad family Mum was a tea lady, kit washer, number 1 fan and most of all an inspiration. Mum always showed immense pride putting everyone before herself whatever was put in front of her.

My Dad is 85 and was her main carer but we received fantastic support from Severn Hospice through their team of outreach nurses and Hospice at Home carers, they do a fantastic job supporting families throughout Shropshire and Mid Wales. Mum was loved and cared for by these special people. The tumour was so aggressive, but with the help of the staff at Severn Hospice she remained comfortable, happy, pain free and in good humour.

I have 12 months to do this challenge but my target is to complete it in half that time (hopefully less than that) I will receive a daily tracker of my virtual position and will keep you posted!

I have never been a distance runner, when I played competitive cricket I was part of a team, I hated training and only sprinted if I was batting or chasing after the ball off my own bowling! I’ve never run for a bus nor a train, I waited for the next one! So putting the miles into my legs will be telling. This challenge involves some running - some jogging - some hiking and walking!

If anyone wishes to join me on certain legs of my journey, that’s fine. I will welcome the motivation and company. But otherwise, I am setting up my fundraising page to support Severn Hospice at Home. Every donation counts and you will be with me on my journey being part of my team!

It’s the least I can do seeing first hand what care, love and support my Mum and Dad received during these challenging times. We all know the struggles that Covid is affecting some more than others. I just hope I can do something that will give me immense pride as a memory to my Mum...
