Story
Tom, our nephew, set up School Ground Sounds in 2014 whilst working as a Maths teacher in a South London Secondary School.
School Ground Sounds aims to improve the lives of young people through music. Operating in Brixton and focussing on those from lower income backgrounds, it provides song-writing and music-making opportunities to 11 – 16 year olds – aiming to build confidence and valuable life skills as well as building positive engagement and keeping them off the increasingly dangerous streets.
For the 16 – 24 age bracket, it also provides opportunities and support to aspiring musicians who are NEET (not in employment, education or training). Particularly through the mentoring programme and the Grit School (a seven-week crash course in the music industry) it provides young people with contacts, insights, skills and confidence to pursue their dreams. With the decline in priority and funding given to music in state schools the demand for what SGS offers is greater than ever.
Tom works tirelessly for his charity and raising funds is not at all easy, so any donations are hugely appreciated.
