Story
Hello, thank you for visiting my fundraising page. This is probably a terrible misjudgement but having seen the relentlessly awful news daily from around the world I thought it would be more useful doing something, rather than just being persistently outraged.
This Sept, I’m going to be running 50km in support of migrant communities. Obviously not all at once, but over a week (from the 18th), so there’s a proper degree of jeopardy here for a middle-aged man, whose fitness has flatlined over the last 2-years, but also some feasible chance I’ll survive.
I’m doing this because of the increasingly hostile environment for migrants in the UK. What with the situation in Afghanistan and arising out of other global conflicts, I think we’re losing sight of the people at the heart of these crises, as well the fundamental principle of fairness. People who have come here to seek sanctuary and simply want to put down roots and thrive. Instead, too many are left without basic rights, and demonised by politicians and the media. It doesn’t have to be this way – that’s why I’m taking on the People Move challenge, to raise funds for the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants (JCWI).
JCWI is a charity that provides legal advice to migrants, and campaigns for a fairer immigration system. Their legal team fight for the rights of asylum-seekers, undocumented migrants and even people who’ve lived here their whole lives, but aren’t considered British. They get people off deportation flights, out of detention, back to their homes and families.
JCWI also campaigns to scrap the hostile environment and inject a bit of humanity back into our system. They work with migrants, grassroots campaigners and politicians to push for change. This work is so important at a time like this, with migrants’ rights under ever greater attack and new arrivals to the UK about the experience the UK’s bureaucratic maze.
At times like these, it can be hard to know where to start or what to do. I’ve taken on the People Move challenge because it’s a practical way to take action – every penny raised will support JCWI’s work fighting for the rights of migrants, and for a more just society.
I would be so grateful for any and all donations! And if you are not able to donate right now, please could you help me spread the word by sharing this page on social media or with friends or family? I am I very socially disassociated individual, so I’ll need all the help I can get. Together, we can do something amazing and help secure a fairer future for all our fellow global citizens, because that’s who they are.
Thank you!
