Story
With the support of several North West rowing clubs I am cycling 216 kilometers on international albinism awareness day 2021 (13th June), a kilometer for every person killed across 29 African countries related to their albinism.
What is Albinism?
Albinism is a genetic condition where people are born with a deficiency of pigmentation in their skin making them at much higher risk of sun burns. People with albinism usually have much farer skin and hair, while often having associated eye problems such as nystagmus, astigmatism, photophobia and general poor eyesight.
In sub saharan Africa there are still beliefs going around that people with albinisms are so called "ghosts" and that they have special healing powers causing them to be hunted and marginalised by many small communities.
Standing Voice?
Standing Voice is an international non-governmental organisation based in Tanzania, Malawi and the UK. Founded in 2013, Standing Voice promotes and protects the rights of people with albinism and their families across East Africa. The organisation exists as a catalyst to amplify marginalised voices, enabling individuals to shape their own lives and futures, with programmes in Health, Education, Advocacy, Community Development and Trauma Recovery.
