We provide unconditional friendship, support and practical help to people in crisis and in need. We work with children, homeless people, all adult victims of modern slavery and those dealing with drug and/or alcohol addiction

Story

The Salvation Army is a Christian Church & registered Charity working in 130 countries worldwide and is one of the largest and most diverse providers of social welfare in the world. In the UK and Republic of Ireland this work includes more than 800 Salvation Army social service centres and community churches. We provide unconditional friendship, support and very practical help to people in crisis and need and work with children, homeless people, all adult victims of modern slavery and those dealing with drug and/or alcohol addiction.

It’s the time of year again when we ask for more help to support The Salvation Army’s work here in Hythe and Romney Marsh. It has been an incredibly challenging year for so many people, in so many ways.

We have definitely seen the demand for our Foodbank increase.
In 2021 we supplied 1,172 food parcels and so far this year we have already supplied 1,316. This has involved procuring huge quantities of food and has seen a small army of volunteers stepping up to the challenge of manning our Foodbank and helping the vulnerable in our community.

We are now busy preparing for Christmas which involves providing
a 3-course meal on Christmas Day for those who are struggling or would otherwise be on their own this Christmas and again is initiated and run by a team of willing volunteers.

Our Toy appeal for children and families is also well underway and last year we saw a daunting rise in the number of referrals
received to us from local agencies and schools. Last year, one school alone received toys for over 100 children! That number is expected to rise this year. Despite the challenges, we are determined to be there for those who need us most at Christmas and indeed all year round.

The pandemic, whilst not as severe now, still hampers our
ability to raise funds for our work and has reduced our income substantially. We have seen however that the residents of Hythe, match the need with their generosity and we value the trust people place in us when they support our work with donations of food, toys, and finance. We thank you all.
