Story
On 14th and 15th September, members of the Newcore team, including me, my wife Alice and other friends of the business, will be attempting a 125 mile triathlon from the source of the River Wye in the Welsh hills, down to its mouth into the Severn Estuary at Chepstow.
We will be walking/running 10 miles across the moor from the source at Plynlimon in the Cambrian Mountains to the nearest road, then cycling 90 miles to Symonds Yat. We then pick up our kayaks to paddle 16 miles to the tide and finish off with a near half-marathon on foot to the sea.
We are undertaking this for our charity of 2023/4, the Rivers Trust, which is the umbrella charity for 63 local Rivers Trusts throughout the UK & Ireland. The Rivers Trust provides environmental, legal, data gathering, communications, financial advice and other support to local river trusts - allowing more effective impact in their own critical work, defending fragile river systems against polluters and holding them to account.
The work of the charity is hugely important in the work to reverse the decline of many UK river systems - not least the Wye itself which is one of the most diverse ecosystems in the UK, but has been blighted with phosphate and nitrates over the past few years. The Rivers Trust, its member Trusts and Afonydd Cymru (which represents Trusts in Wales), are making significant progress in addressing this complex problem.
If you would like to sponsor us, you can be sure that a) all the money we raise will go to the Rivers Trust; and b) that they are likely to be assisting the local trust that defends the eco-system of your own local rivers
Overall we are hoping to raise £100k from the event. Newcore is covering all the costs for participants so that donors’ money plus gift aid goes straight to the charity.
We will be most grateful for any contribution - and if you feel the urge to join us, please do let me know.
Many thanks
Hugo
