Story
As most of you know, Vicki (My wife) has been in a ongoing battle against a eating disorder for many years now. The last 3 years I have seen this horrible mental illness take over her life and control every aspect of who she is as a person. Vicki is in the process of recovery now, but it is still a daily battle fighting this illness and without the support she receives from a range of people, I would not be writing this post, I would be writing an eulogy.
With the new laws coming in placing calories on menus, people don’t see or understand the impact this will have on those with all different types of eating disorders and for our future generation.
To quote a doctor from a morning news channel “People with eating disorders don’t go to restaurants”. People with eating disorders and in RECOVERY from eating disorders do eat out on a daily basis. The stigmatisation & assumptions around eating disorders are simply fuelling a fire that is already out of control.
Do you know the NHS spends £9.4 billion pound on eating disorders a year and this will rise dramatically with the new laws coming in place.
1 in 5 people that have a eating disorder unfortunately loose their lives. 3 in 5 only partially recover and eating disorders have the highest mortality rates amongst all psychiatric disorders.
Now, not everything is bad there are some great charity’s out there and I wanted to give something back to the charity that have helped Vicki immensely.
As a boyfriend, fiancé and now husband I have seen Vicki and her daily fights, but with this illness, there’s only limited things you can do to help. There’s no quick fix, they require professional help and a lot of hard work.
I want nothing more than to be able to take her battles away but i can’t. Not with an eating disorder. So apart from the love, courage & support that I can provide for my wife, I thought what else could I do…….
I am going to walk 39 miles (62.7km) from Nantwich Town Football Club to Goodison Park home of the mighty blues!! I am hoping to raise £400 for BEAT so they can help other people who have eating disorders but also continue to support family’s through the process. I am hoping people can donate whatever they can to help me hit this target and maybe even smash it because without charity’s like BEAT i would of lost Vicki a long time ago!
I will be training over the next coming months and hope to complete the challenge within the first weeks of the new Premier League football season! 💙💙💙
