We support homeless young people to to achieve their full potential

Story

I'm the worst offender of all, walking past "undesirables", moving across the pavement to the opposite side so I don't have to confront the reality others live.

Well, it's just impossible these days to dodge them, these homeless people seem to have just popped up everywhere. On my walk to work I pass at least 5, it used to be 1. I used to cope, but it has just become rather inconvenient now. I try to avoid eye contact, because I just don't like that slight feeling of guilt that lasts about 35 seconds.

"Sorry my man, I don't carry change" - I put my hand in my pocket and shake the empty linen to prove my point and hurry past. Gosh, lucky escape.

It's OK, you aren't supposed to give them money anyway, it'll just be spent on drugs or booze, oh,... and remember that video of the millionaire who was caught begging, who knows who he really is?

Oh no, the next lady has clocked me... do I smile, do I look away? All I want is my Pret sandwich, but this is ridiculous, it's like walking the gauntlet. Quick, look at my phone, yes, that's what I'll do - she will understand if I look at my phone, that'll break eye contact... got away from that one.

The misfortune of all these people, it's not my responsibility, it's their own, so lazy, get a job, anyway, it is the Government's duty to look after them, not mine.

"Big Issue" says the bearded man at the station, "I've already got that one" (I lie). " You can't have sir, this one only came out today"...Busted... what do I do... default "so sorry, I just don't have any change on me"…Fuck! Must remember not to use that exit again... problem solved!

Now, where should I go on holiday this year.....

All these stories are true, 100% genuine and I am embarrassed to admit them, but if I don't start by confronting my own pitiful excuses and looking to do even just this one small thing, how can we as a "caring" society make any difference?

If anything here, just one thing, reminds you of yourself in even one small way, please, I beg you, take a moment to think of them, the shadows at your feet and make an effort to help.

I don't expect everyone to sleep rough for a night to raise funds, I'll do that for you, but please show your support with an act of kindness and support Depaul. Your money will go to a charity that supports those in need in all the right ways and your money will not go to drugs or booze.

Thank you, even if you just read this and think about it when you pass a homeless person in the future.
