Here is Kaitlyn's journey over the last 2 1/2 years, kindly shared by Emily and Clark (Mum and Dad):
Kaitlyn was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in May 2019 at 17 months old at Wexham Park Hospital. Within 24 hours, she was driven on blue lights to the John Radcliffe Hospital where she commenced 2.5 years of intensive chemotherapy and multiple other treatments. Kaitlyn had a very challenging induction period to her treatment after getting sepsis from her Hickman Line that had been fitted to administer her medications. This resulted in a 5 day stay in intensive care where she was intubated and ventilated.
From then on, Kaitlyn has come up against many other further challenges with well over 100 overnight stays in hospital due to multiple complications with her treatment. One of which resulted in a visit from the air ambulance team in her own front room!!
The list of treatments Kaitlyn has endured is very extensive including, blood and platelet transfusions, bone marrow aspirates, lumbar punctures, x-rays, ultrasounds, echocardiograms, 4 separate central line placements, 100's of infusions and many many general anesthetics.
This week, is the light at the end of a dark tunnel. Kaitlyn rings the End of Treatment Bell. The future is bright for our shining star.
Kaitlyn and her family have been supported by many charities and fabulous people over the last 2 1/2 years but the one that has given Kaitlyn and her older brother Jude encouragement and recognition for what they have achieved is a charity called Beads of Courage UK, whose aim is to support children and their families through some of the toughest times in their lives. Have a look at the website below to see the fantastic work they do: https://beadsofcourageuk.org/
