What am I doing?
So last year my cousin Sam goes and throws himself out of a plane in the name of this great charity. Since I’m not anywhere near as brave (or stupid- you decide), I’ve decided to do the Wirral Costal Walk. Not quite as outrageous, but for those of you who know me you will know that walking 15 miles is not exactly my idea of a jolly weekend afternoon, largely because it doesn’t involve a gin based beverage…
Why am I doing it?
My Aunty Barb was diagnosed with cancer in December 2012. It’s true what they say about how it can affect anyone; she’s always looked 20 years younger than she is, had a healthy diet and ran marathons! So it came as a devastating shock to the entire family when we were given this news. We are very lucky that while her diagnosis is terminal, Barb is determined to make the best of every moment. I can hand on heart say that the support and care she has received and continues to receive from St John’s hospice is an inspiration, and has given her the confidence not to hide away, but continue to be brave and proud of the person she is.
The charity
The Wirral Hospice St Johns www.wirralhospice.org is looking at running costs of £3.1 million pounds for the year; that’s £258,000 per month and £8,490 for every 24 hours of care. They provide specialist palliative care and support for patients with severe and progressive disease, where curative treatment is no longer possible. If I can help to ensure this fantastic service continues to be here for my aunty, and many others like her, then I will- even if it means walking 15 miles and tearing my feet to ribbons.
