Home is so important. When we are poorly; when we are sad or tired or lost; when we are dying, it's the only place we want to be. It is our comfort and our sanctuary. 

In April 2012 my mum Annie underwent surgery for an aggressive brain tumour. A fortnight after the surgery - and after several spells in intensive care - the doctors told us there was nothing else they could do to keep her alive. My sister and I knew, unquestionably, that she would want to get away from the hospital ward and home to the place that she loved.

Thanks to Helen's Trust we were able to take mum home to her own bed, and for the first time in what seemed like forever she sat up, smiled and drank a few sips of tea. Helen's Trust provided nurses to care for her, to bathe her, to sit with her through the nights so we could sleep. They were calm, gentle and patient. I think of those amazing women, Debbie and Jayne, as mum's guardian angels. I can't thank them enough. Mum died at home on 30th April 2012, surrounded by family, spring air and birdsong.

I'm running for Helen's Trust because I want other families to receive the help that we had when they need it most. Helen's Trust understand the importance of home. Even just £50 can make the world of difference to somebody with a terminal illness.
