Story
In June 2008, on the day after Matilda was born, we found out she had something called Tetralogy of Fallot which meant her heart wasn't working properly and that she would need to have surgery as soon as her body was big enough to cope with it. When she went into heart failure at 3 and a half months (weighing only 10lb) she had open heart surgery at Great Ormond Street hospital to repair her heart. The care we received from the doctors and nurses at Great Ormond Street was fantastic and knowing that our little baby was being cared for by one of the world's most renowned children's hospitals made our experience so much easier to cope with. After her surgery she was in intensive care and the nurses who looked after her were so calm and gentle that they made a very difficult situation more bearable. Matilda is now 10 and is a wonderful, fun little girl who is raring to get to the start line of this 5k!!
In November 2013, Daisy, who was 7 at the time, suffered a number of strokes and TIAs after she started getting blood clots in her brain which blocked the blood supply to some of her cerebral arteries. She was transferred to Great Ormond Street from UCLH and she was in hospital for a long time whilst the neurologists worked out how best to treat her. Daisy is now 12 and is the joyous ball of energy behind the Hipwell Race for the Kids team!! She has been desperate to do the race ever since she first raced it when she was only 6 years old, the year before her stroke.
We cannot thank Great Ormond Street hospital and all its staff enough. We are all so incredibly lucky to have this hospital. You never know when you might need it. Please give whatever you can afford, small or large, the hospital will use your money in ways you probably can't even imagine unless you have been a parent of a child being treated in the hospital and you see all the children and the immense range of illnesses that the hospital try to help with every day of every year.
