Story
Hello Humans! Please read my spiel!
I am fortunate enough to work for a phenomenal company, who also happen to have a great philanthropic culture. We have done a ton of really fun tasks to raise money for UNICEF since I have joined them, and this year brings another huge challenge.
I have been given the incredible opportunity to join a group of my colleagues to climb Kilimanjaro in December 2018. As a group we will be tackling the Rongai Route. It is one of the medium-length routes, taking around 8 days to complete. Starting from the northern side of the mountain, the Rongai route offers a more gradual ascent, allowing plenty of time to acclimatize to altitude.
Anyone who has had even the most insignificant interaction with me will probably either be laughing by this point or thinking 'But Hil, you avoid any and all athletic activities - not to mention there wont be bathtubs on Kilimanjaro, its a mountain not a Marriott.'
To this I say - That is exactly why I have signed up to do it.
I am so incredibly fortunate that every day I have access to medical care, clean water, and a safe place to sleep at night. As someone who is so privileged in my day to day life, it would be incredibly obtuse of me to no accept a challenge like this to better myself, while also being able to raise money for a worthy and necessary cause like UNICEF.
Over the coming months along with the physical training, I will surely be embarrassing myself on social media doing various different tasks to raise money and awareness for both myself and my team.
Only 60% of people make it to the summit. I fully anticipate this to be one of the hardest things I have ever done, both physically and mentally - but am up for the challenge!
We have a goal of £2000 per person. That means that together we will raise enough money for UNICEF to buy a 4-Wheel Drive support vehicle that allows health workers to provide vaccination programmes and medical care to children in remote communities.
Hopefully you want to support this worthy cause, but also me and my team mates in challenging ourselves.
Happy donating!
