Story
Henry was under the care of The Royal Marsden Hospital in Sutton from the time of his initial diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukaemia in June 2019. Over the last almost three years Henry spent many weeks on the Children’s Inpatient Ward, paid numerous visits to the Children's Daycare Unit and also to the Outpatient Department in order to receive treatment and be kept under constant review.
With Henry’s diagnosis and subsequent relapses we had some very difficult days, and some incredibly hard conversations but there were also times where we laughed a lot too (mostly Henry at Hua and I!). Throughout his various inpatient stays Henry would most often be found in the parent’s lounge playing increasingly complex card and board games with Hua (whilst Sam and many of the staff looked on in bemusement!). There was always talk that it should be renamed the Henry lounge as he spent so much time in there. Our hope is now that the incredible staff who cared for Henry with so much love and kindness will now raise a smile when they walk past the parents lounge as they remember the funny, intelligent, brave boy who could tell you the indepth rules for every game he was playing (if he was in the mood to talk to you!).
Everyone we met went above and beyond not only in caring for Henry but also for us a family. The team at the Royal Marsden didn’t just consist of the dedicated medical and nursing personal. But play specialists who Henry spent time with to understand some of the procedures that he had to have, teachers providing lessons in the dedicated school room, the opportunity to complete a whole variety of sports with the visiting PE teacher, a catering team who made Henry pancakes when he wouldn’t eat anything else and who most importantly came around with the ice cream trolley.
We are truly grateful to everyone who cared for Henry and for us as a family, we will never forget their kindness.
