Story
Well, we did it!! It was a great day and not too painful but soooo worth it. I've added some pictures taken by Kenny who was a brilliant support, having given up his place with the elite athletes to run with me. The thought of your support and generous donations was really helpful during the run...we kept working out how much we had "earned" as each mile went past so thanks again to everyone.
Wow!!! What an amazing total - over £7,300 when Gift Aid added and pushing £7500+ for Lupus UK research. We made our target of £3,000 then Witherby Publishing Group matched the £3,000 and you are still donating. Thank you, thank you thank you!!!
What a fantastic position be in to enjoy the run on Sunday with all this support- over £500 per mile, over £30 every 100 yards, £1 every three strides!!!!!
Sarah and I are blown away by your generosity! Thank you all so much. This will really make a difference and it is so inspiring for me. If you haven't donated yet don't let this amazing achievement put you off - Lupus UK can use as much as we can get. Last Wednesday was a great day to hit the initial target because we met with Sarah's Lupus consultant who also believes this is much needed money for research.
For those new to the site the background is that Sarah, my wife, was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus in May 2010. In a way this was a relief because she had been suffering unexplained symptoms for a good few years up to that point. However, we had hardly heard of the disease, knew very little about it and certainly had no idea about the devastating effect it was to have on Sarah.
Lupus is a chronic presently incurable disease of the immune system, a condition in which the body's defence mechanism begins to attack itself causing inflammation and damage in the joints, muscles and organs.
As the name Systemic Lupus implies, almost any organ or system within the body might be affected. Lupus is perhaps the classical multi-symptom illness, deserving of far greater priority and investigation by the medical community.
The impact on Sarah has changed her life. In Sarah's case, she has dealt with this situation with enormous courage and optimism despite the main symptoms of extreme fatigue and constant pain in joints and muscles. She has had to give up the full time job she has loved for 22 years but has still remained an inspiration to her team and to other Lupus sufferers.
The only medical help comes through efforts to manage and mitigate the symptoms using copious medication, none of which has been developed specifically for lupus and much of which brings additional unwelcome symptoms.
As a family we are very frustrated that we can't "fix" the situation so we've decided to raise funds to help research efforts for better treatment and hopefully a cure. Find out more at www.lupusuk.org.uk
Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure. Your details are safe with JustGiving – they’ll never sell them on or send unwanted emails. Once you donate, they’ll send your money directly to the charity and make sure Gift Aid is reclaimed on every eligible donation by a UK taxpayer. So it’s the most efficient way to donate - I raise more, whilst saving time and cutting costs for the charity.
Now we have reached the target, as promised Witherby Publishing Group, www.witherbys.com , has matched the £3,000 to bring the total to a minimum of £6,000 so again, thank you thank you thankyou!!
