Story
On the 17th September 2018, I gave a talk at the Deben Probus group. On the 18th October, Nicola and Alex from Macmillan met with Adrian Smith who came up with a crazy idea to have a small event on the Deben. He was inspired by the film, Life on the Deben and my Macmillan talk - combine both and you get the Deben Macmillan Challenge. So what is it???
Sail, Swim, Walk, Row, Run, Canoe, Kayak, Cycle, Paddle Board or Ride on Horseback. How do you want to cover the 28 miles (approx.) of the Deben Macmillan Challenge between the 24th August and 8th September 2019?You can do as little or as much as you like. You can do it on 1 day or many days. You can mix disciplines, you can do it alone or in a group. Just have FUN!
So... I hear you say - What are you doing Henderson? Well as you know I'm not known for my physical prowess so.... Over the 2 week period I will walk 28 miles in and around the Deben. I know it's not a lot to do in 2 weeks but I know I can do it - no point in me promising to do something I can't achieve. Why 28 miles I hear you say - must do something about these voices in my head - 28 miles is roughly the round trip from Woodbridge to Felixstowe and back but more important £28 will pay for a Macmillan Nurse for 1 hour so my target is £1120 which is 40 x £28. It's OK I know most nurses work much more than 40 hours per week so hopefully we can do the same and make more than 1 week's wages. So if you give me £28 you will pay for 1 hour - but quite honestly if you give me 28p I will still be grateful.
In Suffolk, there are approximately 4,600 people diagnosed with cancer each year and approximately 28,300 are living with and beyond cancer. In 2019 someone in the UK is diagnosed with cancer every 2 minutes. Sadly we might all need Macmillan.
As well as the Challenge we are also having a 'September Soiree' on September 7th and a screening of 'Life on the Deben' at the Riverside Cinema - Check out the pics below or email me for more info
I'll keep you up to date with my progress!!
