Story
Meet Matthew Hall, a happy, fun-loving kid who enjoys outings with his family. In 2014, Matthew became a patient at Prisma Health Children’s Hospital–Upstate after a CT scan showed a tangerine-size mass, called a juvenile pilocytic astrocytoma (JPA) hypothalamic brain tumor, located in the center of his brain.
“It was May 2014 and Matthew hadn’t been acting his normal self. He’d been sick and very sleepy. We took him to the Greer ER and that’s where we found out he had a tumor. They brought us to the Children’s Hospital via ambulance,” recalls Matthew’s mother, Elizabeth Hall.
Due to the size and location of Matthew’s tumor, a customized plan of care was implemented and his first round of chemotherapy was given in October 2015. Since his initial diagnosis, he has endured numerous MRIs, 16 months of chemo/around 50 chemo treatments, and more than a half-dozen surgical procedures at our collaborative-partner healthcare facilities that use an Intra-Operative MRI to safely remove as much of the tumor as possible. After a biopsy, an eleven-hour partial resection surgery and many other procedures, Matthew finds courage and strength in his family and friends and the support group he’s met throughout our healthcare system. Mrs. Hall believes that she and her family gain their strength in the midst of these difficult times from little Matthew, himself.
