Story
Helen and I first "invested" in an ecologically-rich-niche habitat protection charity at the end of the 70's, when they were a brand new idea, but not very well operated. By the time JD (then known as Kate) came along in 1990, the World Land Trust was the new kid on this particular block and was receiving endorsements from people who we really respected, like David Attenborough ("my favourite charity").
It looked a good way to invest in our children's future. It turned out that we were the first parents to give this particular charity a substantial sum with an accompanying note saying it was to celebrate the birth of our first child, and this was remembered by the WLT who invited us to their 21st birthday celebration a few years back, where Kate, Sophie, Helen and I had the honour to meet the great man.
Needless to say, this has remained our favourite charity as well as Sir David's (.."The money that is given to the World Land Trust, in my estimation, has more effect on the wild world than almost anything I can think of."). It remains fairly small because it does research to find the most difficult and immediate ecological problems and it ensures that its projects have self financing management plans in perpetuity.
They are recipients of the biggest external bequest in Helen's will and she wanted to add to it through any means she could. Please give generously to her cause.
