In April 2018, my Son and Mark's Step-Son, Charlie had a potential life threatening accident at a nightclub in Birmingham. Charlie sustained multiple head injuries and numerous skull fractures. He was unresponsive when West Midlands Ambulance Services arrived at the scene. With Internal bleeding and swelling to the brain, Charlie was rushed by Ambulance to QE Hospital. Charlie stayed in Critical Care for 4 days and then transferred to the Neurological Ward, where he then developed Viral meningitis. Charlie underwent a number of emergency operations and with the care and expertise of the Neuro Team, under the watchful eye of Consultant Mr Moussa ,Charlie remained in Hospital for a further 4 weeks. We are so very proud of Charlie for his positive attitude and determination to make a full recovery over the last 8 months since the accident. This has enabled him to return back to his studies in Birmingham City University.
We owe everything to the West Midlands Ambulance Service, Mr Moussa ( Neuro Surgeon), his amazing team in the Neuro Critical Care Unit and the Research Team at QE. Without their quick response and dedication in caring for Charlie, the outcome would have been unbearable.
So............ when the ballot opened at the beginning of May 2018 for the London Marathon 2019, both Mark and Myself sat around Charlie's Hospital bed in QE and entered the ballot. "Just in case" we were lucky enough to get in, we would raise some money for a new blood pressure monitor. We would love to raise £500 with Lloyds Bank matching pound for pound up to £500.00. Therefore £1000.00 would be a small token of gratitude.
Mark has been extremely fortunate to gain a place in the ballot, with myself being one of the lucky 1000 winners of the Bequest Draw. Mark celebrated with a Mince Pie and I had my last pudding for 6 months ! Wish us luck and if you can spare a fiver or tenner, it would make the training and running just over 26 miles just a little easier. What's Charlie going to be doing in all this ? Cheering us both on from the streets of London and eating lots of cake !
