Like so many lockdown and tiers and the worry of it all has become a bit heavy! Selfishly I wanted to do something to help me worry about this stuff less whilst also practice what I preach when it comes to being physically active a little bit more! However I also wanted to do something productive and something that gave and helped others; a win:win scenario; help me to help myself whilst also helping others! I didn’t need to look too far for inspiration around what on earth I should do.......my mum!
In 2016 my mum tripped going into the kitchen and in the blink of an eye; she was left paralysed from neck down facing the world in a wheelchair with life changing injuries. She spent 8 months (hence challenge being for 8 months!) in the amazing Spinal unit in Southport rehabilitating and learning a whole new world before returning home (quick shout out to my dad who didn’t miss one day visiting despite it being an hour journey each way - hero!!) My mum maintained a positive outlook throughout and I never once heard her grumble about what had happened, she just dug deep and used her determination to adapt - this is something I’m sure on rainy day when I still have 6000 steps to do; I’ll need to remember - my challenge is nowhere near as big as the one my mum overcame!!
This challenge is my way of helping this great charity support families like ours through some some tricky times and I hope with your support I can give them a little bit to make a big difference to peoples new lives. I can only imagine how much the current pandemic has added to those with Spinal Cord injuries; particularly if they are newly injured and in a spinal unit, I hope I can help them.
Unfortunately my mum very suddenly died in 2019 so this challenge in very much in her memory. I know she’d be pleased to see me do this and I can already hear her nagging me on the rainy days when I put off doing those few steps; I’m sure she’ll be with me every step of every day!
If you can support me through giving, that would be great to help me, help others but I know for many that just won’t be possible - encouragement and nagging to get the steps done will be as valueable!!
Thanks
