Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Most of you will know that I lost my lovely mum to cancer last September. She was diagnosed with lung cancer in September 2017 and fought it courageously to the end. Unfortunately she had a stroke after her 1st chemotherapy and then came to live with us from January 18 to June 18 when she began to need 24 hour care and had to go into a nursing home. My mum had always been a slim, fit, active, healthy eating, non-smoking, rarely drinking lady who always looked after herself. Cancer robbed her of everything she loved, her health, home, dignity and finally her life. Cancer doesn’t care who you are or how well you’ve looked after yourself. Near the end of her life mum was admitted to St Luke’s, where she was looked after with a compassion and care I have never witnessed before. All the staff, including the nurses, receptionists, house keepers, chefs and of course the consultants looked after mum, made her comfortable and she became calm and pain free. Sadly she died in St Luke’s 5 days after being admitted, but we can never re pay any of the staff for the wonderful care and dignity they gave her. The place is amazing, but is a charity and needs millions of pounds a year to carry on giving people from Sheffield this amazing palliative and end of life care. My husband Tony, Jackie Deffley and I are all running Sheffield half marathon on Sunday 14th April. Jackie lost her lovely dad to cancer 15 years ago & he ran numerous marathons and raised money for lots of different charities and whenever Jackie runs she feels he’s running at her side and cheering her on.
