Story
This year's 1/2 marathon will be run in memory of my dad. Dad started losing his sight about 5 years ago due to diabetes. The sight loss was quick and there was nothing anyone could do to stop this. Three year later he was completely blind. Consider this - you have had sight all your life then at 77 years old you have to adapt and deal with being blind. Imagine having no concept of day or night, losing your way around your own house and having to be fed because you can't see your food. He missed his grandchildren growing and changing but me and my Keith are grateful he was able to see them all as babies. He also NEVER complained about his predicament. It very often had me, mum and Keith in tears for him though.
At what was a very very hard time for us all, The Sheffield Royal Society for the Blind came into our lives and without doubt gave dad a completely new lease of life. The patience and care of all the volunteers and staff was amazing and we'll not forget what that meant to dad. I have some fabulous memories of the christmas and party nights I used to go to with dad at the SRSB centre and the laughs we had there. Just to see him enjoying life was precious.
The best part of last year's race was seeing his face light up as he held my marathon medal. I'll never forget how proud he was that day and the look on his face will stay with me forever. It made me feel on top of the world and so worthwhile. Please help me support this fabulous charity this year!
