Story
Anyone who knows me & my family is aware that my Mum, Barbara was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 2008. When I looked back, all of the signs were there, I didn't know anything about Parkinson's symptoms. Since then life has changed a lot. The medication available today has enabled her to enjoy a good quality of life. How amazing it would be if there was a cure!!!
David's Grandad, Harry Higgs had Parkinson's in the 1960's. There were few drugs available back then to help the symptoms and I am told that he suffered for many years.
What is Parkinson's - I am often asked.
People get Parkinson's because some of the nerve cells in their brains that produce a chemical called dopamine have died. The loss of dopamine can cause problems with movement and mental processes. About one person in every 500 has Parkinsons. That's about 127,000 people in the UK. Most people who get Parkinson's are aged 50 or over, but younger people can develop it too. If you think about it, it's very likely you will be affected in some way. It is progressive and presently there is no cure.
Parkinson's UK are a research and support charity leading the work to find a cure. Their network of researchers, specialist nurses, local groups, website, resources and helpline provide invaluable support for people with Parkinson's their carers and families.
I hope you will support Sue and I and help to improve life for everyone affected by Parkinson's.
