Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

“I owe a great deal to this wonderful organisation. Many years ago, Cambridge Samaritans were there for me in my darkest hours. Their understanding and encouragement helped me more than words could ever say.”

Cambridge Samaritans, based at Emmanuel Road, answer around 30,000 calls every year and have more than 180 volunteers operating the phone lines.

During 2021/22 a major renovation of the building has enabled volunteers to answer even more calls. It also made the space more safe, pleasant and convenient to work in.

However, there is still much upgrading work remaining to be done. The kitchen units and fridge, toilets, washbasins, and flooring all need replacing.

“The people who work in that building are all volunteers. They give their time and empathy out of the goodness of their hearts, at all hours of the day and night. They offer support and a listening ear to anyone who needs someone to talk to. There is no problem too big or small for them to care about. The least they deserve is a pleasant working environment in which to carry out this vital service.”

“The Samaritans do not spend money on big salaries or TV advertisements. All the money they raise goes to support the service. I have always wanted to thank them for helping me, and now at last, at the age of 66, I have that opportunity.”

“I first saw wingwalking at Duxford Airshow a few years ago with my son. It looked as terrifying as it did exciting, but I’ve always been ready for a challenge. I have practised yoga, trapeze and pole dancing for years so I am hoping very much that this will give me the confidence I need to go through with it.”

“As well as my work as a community artist, I also have the privilege of working as a carer for the elderly. My clients often say I am an angel - now I have the chance to fly like an angel too!”

“All funds raised will go directly to the Samaritans; I will be covering all expenses myself.”

The wingwalk takes place on September 8th at Headcorn aerodrome in Kent. Supporters and friends of the Samaritans are welcome to attend.
