We support people with Spinal Cord Injury to help them live full, independent lives

Story

Hello

Thank you for taking the time to have a look at this page,
it is appreciated. A large part of these types of actions and activities is about raising awareness. I would be delighted if what you got from this is an understanding of spinal injury, the impact, and the vital work that Aspire do to support those affected.

My name is Helen, I am an Occupational Therapist by background, and I work in the NHS, where I have enjoyed a varied career over the last 35 years. I love people and get very passionate about many things. As an Occupational Therapy student, I had a placement on a spinal injury unit, and saw first-hand the impact these injuries can have. The very ethos and core principles of Occupational Therapy is about encouraging and supporting full independence in its widest sense.  This is something Aspire seek to do, and the support they offer is vital.  A life can change in a second, and the work Aspire do is crucial at these times.

I have registered to take part in the "Solent Swim Challenge"
This will see me leaving Stokes Bay at 7am on 23rd July 2023 and
swimming 2.5-3miles (tides dependent) to the Isle of Wight, along with 11 other people. I understand that tides and wind can add additional challenges. Despite the fact I have a slow puncture on my left arm band, I am confident I can make it. In the case of strong winds, I do have a backup plan. I have a couple of friends in South West France on standby, who will be out with their binoculars scouring the coastline with a flask of Horlicks at the ready, in case everything goes awry.

  • Every 4 hours someone is paralysed by a spinal injury.
  • 71% of people who speak to Aspire will increase their independence
  • Aspire provides practical help to people who have been paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury, supporting them from injury to independence

These 3 facts alone inspire me to seek to raise as much as I
can for their phenomenal work Aspire do. I would be so pleased if you were able to contribute.

I appreciate that many of you will already support in various ways, charities of your choice. I fully understand and respect that, that
so please don’t feel you have to sponsor me. If anyone does feel able to donate even the smallest amount it would be appreciated, and more importantly will make a direct difference so someone with a spinal injury.

For anyone wanting to know more about this charity please
take a look at their website https://www.aspire.org.uk/

With thanks
