Story

My dad, Dave, would be turning 80 this year so I’ve decided to use that as an excuse to run 80k competitively during 2023. That’s two half marathons, three 10ks and two 5ks.

Like so many people, my dad didn’t reach this milestone birthday after being diagnosed with a brain tumour in 2018. The treatments available for this cruel and brutal illness have barely improved in decades, leaving patients, their families and friends to face the reality of no possible cure. Just 12% of adults survive five years post diagnosis.

My dad died almost 28 years after my best friend in junior school, Sarah, also died of a brain tumour. The condition is the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40.

Rather than just take on the one challenge this year, I’ve signed myself up to do several:

February 12th: Aintree 5k

May 7th: Liverpool Spring 10k

August 6th: Rocky Horror Picture Show 10k

August 31st:: MediaCity 10k

October 8th: Royal Parks Half Marathon

November 26th: Oulton Park Half Marathon

December 3rd: Liverpool Santa Dash 5k

Having written all this out as a list, I’m deeply regretting my life choices. Still not convinced my knees will hold out. Please give generously!  Your support is very much appreciated x
