Heidi`s Story:

In 2010 I visited Uganda as a volunteer dentist with a mobile dental team providing free pain relief clinics in rural areas. There is little or no dental care available in many areas of the country, and people still die from tooth infections. Our team of 9 treated around 2000 people in 10 days. Working in schools and church halls with no electricity or running water, the only real treatment we could provide was tooth extractions and dental health education.

I was so moved by the experience, that I plan to visit again in February 2013. This time, I am taking Sarah Byrne, a dental nurse from our practice with me too. We will be part of a different team of dentists, nurses and hygienists and will be visiting different communities.

The emphasis this time is on children and we will be visiting several schools including one for children with HIV/AIDS, and a children`s prison.

In order to take part we need to raise £1000 each for Dentaid, the dental charity, who have run and supported dental projects in many developing countries.eg Uganda, Cambodia, Rwanda. As well as providing dental equipment, they are also involved in promoting oral health and educating about the dangers of Infant Oral Mutilation.

Any money raised here will go directly towards our £2000 Dentaid target. We shall be raising money for our own travel and accomodation separately.
