Story
My friend Tilly's sister Jemima has Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD) and lives in a Mencap care home in Hampshire. Jemima's family, the Brookes, are going to create a special E-Boook for her that will include text, film, images and an interactive element. The E-Book will contain information about how best to care for Jemima and will all importantly give Jemima an authentic voice, so all carers and professionals can understand her sense of humour, her likes and dislikes etc. It will be accessed on an ipad and be simple and easy to use and portable. It will be a live document that can change and grow with Jemima over time. The Brooke family have been working with staff at Jemima's home and a creative design company to create the E-Book.
The most exciting thing about this project for me, is that by developing this practical initiative for Jemima, the Brooke family will make something that other families can benefit from. Because by using Jemima's E-Book as a pilot they will be able to demonstrate to Mencap how it can be rolled out to all the people in Jemima's home and hopefully nationally. This is active citizenship at its best and demonstrates an incentive and progressive use of technology.
