We pioneer life-saving cancer research to help us beat cancer

On August 2nd this year Tom Gearing, Tom Stewart, Rory Read and I will be taking on the London Triathlon. We will be competing in the Olympic distance length triathlon which consists of a 1,500m swim, a 40km bike ride and a 10km run. This will not be an easy task but we are training hard for the event and we will hope to complete the course in a respectable time (particularly as my(hector) dad did it in 3hrs 07mins in 2005!). Our training has started already and Rory is toning his mighty physique as he is, and I quote him, ‘not the slimmest of chaps!’
The major motivation to do the Triathlon is to raise money for two charities, Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation. These two charities have been chosen as all of us have had long histories of family members being affected by both cancer and heart conditions, in particular my grandfather who has battled through both a quadruple bypass operation and bladder cancer and Rory’s grandfather who sadly passed away at the end of last year due to a stroke. The two Toms have also been affected with close family members passing away due to heart conditions and cancer. One if not both of these conditions that these charities support, will most probably affect someone close to you. Each year in the , more than a quarter of a million people are diagnosed with cancer. The four commonest cancers (breast, lung, bowel and prostate) make up over half of all these cases. Doctors estimate that more than one in three of us will get some form of cancer at some point in our lives.
Please feel free to sponsor us online or otherwise. If you do go online (which I recommend) the website Just Giving only allows one charity per person on each page and so Rory has his own separate page for British Heart Foundation and mine is the page for Cancer Research UK. If you would like to donate to Rory’s page rather than mine (or do both), I will not be offended but all four of us will be grateful for any support you can give us.
Thank You.
