Story
Fundraising goal: Endless. Every dollar counts.
Men, women, boys and girls are victims of human trafficking. Sex trade, servitude and forced labor make up the estimated 25,000,000 - 41,000,000 victims. The estimates are so broad because no one knows just how many victims are out there because of the black market industry. At least 300,000 Americans are currently victims.
This art piece is a prayer for all of the victims. Undergarments hang in this beautiful cabinet box eerily lined with chicken wire and locked with an antique padlock. The individual pieces inside are sculpted and hardned by an acrylic wash and gently sway in the wind. Each is bound by the captor, some with black duct tape, some with fancy black necklaces (high net-worth traffickers), electronic cords (online trafficking trade), and paper chains of birth certificates and passports...captors hold victim's identities hostage to keep them in fearful servitude.
The back of the piece holds our prayers that their voices will be heard and that we will do everything we can when confronted with the opportunity to help.
You can scroll through photos at the top of page to view the piece.
Thank you to my friends who donated undergarments of their families and also sacred objects for the prayers. Thank you to my dad for constructing the box, sending it to me and patiently helping me put it together over Zoom.
May this piece raise awareness, be felt, and may we all experience the freedom deserved by all beings.
