Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving charity page. I have decided to take on the Run or Dye 5K challenge to raise money for a small, very under-supported charity designed to support deaf people in Tanzania lead richer and more fulfilling lives.

Tanzania is a large country in central East Africa with a population of around 40 million people. It is one of the poorest countries in the world and, even in towns, access to education, health and social services is very limited.

Deafness can impose considerable social and economic burdens on individuals and their families and communities. Hearing impairments may delay the development of language and cognitive skills, resulting in learning difficulties for school pupils; for adults, the disabilities associated with deafness can make it difficult to find and keep employment. In addition, deafness, along with other disabilities, is often seen as a source of shame for families in Tanzania. This increases the chances of isolation for young deaf people. These burdens tend to fall disproportionately on the poor, because they are less able to obtain preventive and routine care, or treatment to make the condition manageable.

A small donation goes a very long way in Tanzania.

£2.50 pays for a visit to a doctor

£15 provides a complete school uniform (including shoes) for a child

An orange is 10p

A pencil is 8p

Bar of soap 15p

Your donations will be gratefully appreciated.

Tanzanear are a tiny UK charity supporting deaf people in Tanzania. The main support is for Buguruni School for the Deaf and UMIVITA NGO. More details of the good work of this charity can be found at http://tanzanear.org/
