Established in the South Glamorgan Health Authority in 1972, NHS Wales Health Courier Service (HCS) supports front line services across Wales, operating where required 24 hours a day, 365 days a year providing vital Clinical Logistical Support services for Primary and Unscheduled Care in Hospitals, Clinics, Surgeries, GP Practices, Pharmacies, and Schools.
HCS provides a world class leading logistics service supporting local communities, health alliances, local health groups and General Practitioners. HCS employs over 137 people deploying a fleet of some 120 vehicles which transport material such as mail, laundry, medical records, pathology material, blood products, pharmacy supplies, controlled drugs and the transport of nuclear medicine and radioactive isotopes to around 2000 hospitals and other NHS sites every day.
Each year, on average we cover 2.6 million miles and deliver in excess of 7 million items of internal mail and medical records, along with over 8 million items of pathology.
We also operate a Non-Patient Blue Light capability serving major populations and and key NHS Wales sites. This critical life-saving service provides emergency response for blood, blood products, tissue type, emergency pathology, organs, theatre equipment, time-critical pharmacology (cancer treatments), and anti-venom. With the Welsh Ambulance Service, Police and Welsh Government we also provide Blue Light support of EMRTS (Wales Air Ambulance), Major Incident Medical Response Teams (MERIT) and forms a part of the UK infrastructure for emergency distribution of health countermeasures in the event of a UK attack. This service prevents the need to utilise a frontline ambulance resource providing clinical response to patients, ensuring clinicians are kept at the frontline of patient care.
We work as an NHS partner with:
Our services aren't always at the forefront of a patient's mind, yet every day within the NHS in Wales we will have had involvement in the care of every patient. We are more than just a logistics service, we are "The Wheels Of The NHS".
