Leukaemia Research Southend Bikeathon · 27 May 2009

We're dedicated to beating blood cancer. We fund research and support those affected. Since 1960, we've invested over £500 million in blood cancer research, transforming treatments and saving lives. The day we beat blood cancer is now in sight and our researchers are determined to finish the job.

Story

** FINAL UPDATE ** - The grand total raised for 2009 now stands at an unbelievable £910 - thanks everyone!  We've far exceeded our previous years' totals, despite the current economic gloom.  We are touched by your generosity to this worthy cause, thanks again.  H&Jxx

** Well, we did it!  Took us 2 hours, and was not without a struggle.  Fortunately, the weather was kinder to us this year.  But determination made us forget about our aching legs and numb bums, as we pootled along the lovely leafy roads around Great Wakering and beyond.  Thanks again for your support, H&J xx **

p.s.  It's not too late to donate!  We're collecting our sponsorship money in now, and this will go to Leukaemia Research in the next two weeks (offline donations).  However, this page will continue to take online donations until December 6th.

** Thanks everyone, we are touched by your generosity again this year  - especially given the current climate.  We'll do you proud on Sunday! Photos to follow.  **

** 6 days until the Bikeathon, and unfortunately we've both been gripped by nasty headcolds.  Hopefully we'll make speedy recoveries, but it means our training has largely gone out the window!  Never mind, we WILL make it round the 13-mile course, spurred on by all your generous donations.  **

** 2 weeks to go until the Bikeathon.  Panic is now starting to set in.  Thanks for your sponsors so far, very appreciated.  If you're going to be in the Southend area on the day, then why not pop along to Shoebury East Beach and see the hilarity unfold.  Also, if you'd like to actually ride the circuit for charity (but don't want the hassle of raising sponsors) then simply turn up on the day, pay an entry fee (usually about £16) and join the ride.  Great atmosphere, and for a good cause.  **

** August Update - only 4 weeks to go, and the bike is back in one piece!  Still looks rather rusty, and showing all of its 36 years, but relatively roadworthy.  Now limbering up around the streets of Essex, in a bleak attempt to get fit (laughs) between now and the big day  **

** July Update - only 8 weeks until the bike ride, and ALL moving parts on the Chopper bike have needed to be stripped down and re-built, including the 3-speed hub (very fiddly).  Much wire brushing now in progress... **

Here we go again folks, on our latest ruse for the Southend Bikeathon Leukaemia Research campaign.

Deep from the valleys of Welsh Wales, this Raleigh Relic has surfaced (thanks to Sue's shed).  It's an original Mk1 Chopper, completely unrestored and largely in need of the bucket!

Not one to miss out on a challenge, Hazel is now actively overhauling the thing - it's a real fixer-upper!  The aim is to have this 36-year old bicycle original but roadworthy for the Southend Bikeathon - a tall order, as lots of things need doing to it.  Aside from all of that, the saddle is like a brick, and the bike weighs a ton!

HOWEVER - and this is where you come in - Hazel will be riding this for 13 miles in the Bikeathon on September 6th - complete with all its rusty bits (& much to Jo's amusement, as she'll be riding her comfy beach cruiser again).  So dig deep and show your support.  Fingers crossed that metal fatigue won't win the day...

Last year we raised a staggering £800 for Leukaemia Research, through your kind help and support.  We made the effort so others would benefit.  Help us match or beat that amount this year.  Your support, as always, is greatly appreciated.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor us: Leukaemia Research gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.
