Story
My Wonderful team and I are raising money for Action for M.E.
A charity which is very close to my heart. I have personally seen how much M.E. can impact a person's life and it means a lot to me to be able to raise money for an important cause along with the help of a group of incredible friends.
"M.E. has left me grieving for the past, in despair at my present and feeling like my future has been stolen. I have only recently stopped referring to the ‘old me’ and am still learning to accept the limitations my M.E. causes. The need for focused research into the cause of M.E. and increased support services for people with M.E. is huge!”
My sister was diagnosed with M.E. ten years ago and the impact on her life and those around her has been huge. She has always been a hugely motivated, dedicated and active person. She still has all of these personality traits, however because of the M.E. she has had to learn totally new ways to go through life. Seeing her struggle to learn how to put her health ahead of her life goals has been heartbreaking but I am incredibly proud of what she has achieved. I know that she is not the only one who has had their lives impacted by M.E.
“I often feel as though I am living my life behind a pane of glass. On the other side my friends and family are living life if full technicolour, encouraging me to join them and often being frustrated because they cannot see or understand the invisible barrier that separates us. On my side of the glass everything in life is in grey scale, the harder I try to push to live a normal life, the thicker the glass becomes and the further away and the more isolated and distant I become. All I want is my health back, I would trade anything to be the ‘old me’.”
Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (M.E.) is a long-term (chronic), fluctuating, neurological condition that causes symptoms affecting many body systems, more commonly the nervous and immune systems. M.E. affects an estimated 250,000 people in the UK, and around 17 million people worldwide.
M.E. is not just "feeling tired". The symptoms can range from extreme fatigue, flu-like malaise, chronic pain, sleep disturbances, light and sound sensitivity, brain fog, digestive issues and issues with the nervous system.
Some people are able to continue their life with only mild disturbances however many are left bed-bound, unable to work, care for their families and maintain friendships. M.E. steals lives.
It is because the symptoms can vary so much between each person that Walk with M.E. is so important.
By working as a team each member can contribute as much as they are able without putting their health at risk, whether they have M.E. or any other health conditions. It also means that friends and family members are able to walk in honour of those who are too severely ill or bed-bound to take a single step.
