Story
So as many of you will know and some of you won’t I suffered with anorexia and bulimia. After lots of therapy and work I am finally in a place where I feel recovered and I have decided to make it my personal mission to try help as many people as I can, however I can fight eating disorders. Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental health illness yet only 20% of medical schools cover it! 20%!!! Only 20% of doctors in our country received training on eating disorders and the training that is received is very minimal. BEAT have set up Run 20 in an attempt to raise some money to help change this statistic. When I first went to the doctor about my bulimia it was suggested I eat less so I don’t feel the need to be sick. When I first went to the doctor about my anorexia I was told that I wasn’t anorexic because I wasn’t light enough. The bar is too low and that desperately needs to change. Eating disorders are so complex and are not something you can understand unless you’ve experienced them (either first or second hand) or by carrying out research. It is estimated that around 1.25 million people in the country suffer from an eating disorder. Why are only 20% of medical schools providing education on this? Please help me to raise some money to hopefully put us one step closer to providing the appropriate help for those who need it.
