DAY ONE TRAUMA help me get my life back and that's why I run for them!
In November 2012 I had a serious horse riding accident while trailing a new horse. I soon discovered I had shattered my pelvis and caused mild trauma to several other parts of my body. Due to the delay at the initial hospital I was taken to by the time I was operated on I had very little bone left on one side. I was told I would never ride again, would struggle with strenuous exercise, certainly wouldn't run and or be able to carry any more children.
My life as I knew it caved in around me, during this time the three children I had only managed to visit me three times due to hospital policy due to their age.
Then Prof G my fantastic consultant came in and thanks to his amazing surgical ability and the determination I found as I wasn't about to let my life stop, two weeks later I was sitting up and in a wheelchair, I announced I was going home and would be back walking! After three months in a wheelchair I was back walking a lot quicker than predicted and with no crutches!
My family and brilliant friends through this time were so supportive and I owe them so much, they are the reasons I didn't give up as I wanted my life back.
It was then I announced I would ride again and as buying another pony and caring for them while in my wheelchair was causing my husband to give me grief and I couldn't stand it any longer!
Prof agreed to letting me have a second op providing I recovered as well as he hoped I would and I said I would. The second op would mean I could run, ride and have more children (although it was the riding I was really bothered about!)
In January 2014 I had my second op and by March I was back riding, on my second ride out I managed jumping! I never thought I would do this again.
However the one thing I didn't do was the exercise I was meant to after my op as I decided I was busy enough with kids, dogs, horses, etc to get fit which is why the Leeds 10k is such a personal challenge as I have no realised how few muscles I have to help me in this! So the training starts here!
