Story
On the 4th September 2021 the father/son team of Steve and Simon Haswell will set off on a 16-day trek to walk the 190-mile Wainwright Coast to Coast route from St Bees to Robin Hood’s Bay through the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors.
For motivation and to get those stiff sore legs going each morning the couple are aiming to raise a target of £400 (based on a pound per person per mile, with a few miles added for wrong turns) on behalf of the Daisy Appeal. This local charity, which has raised £12.5m to date, was set up in 2000 to support cutting-edge research and provide state-of-the-art equipment and facilities in the fight against cancer, heart disease and dementia. So far the funds have been spent on an £8m research centre, which opened in 2008, and £4.5m was used to set up the Jack Brignall PET-CT Scanning Centre which opened in 2014. The Daisy Appeal now want to build a £7.2m radiochemistry and cyclotron unit so radioactive tracers can be custom made on site. In short, the provision of better biochemical analysis and imaging techniques will enable earlier detection of disease and offer the benefit of personalised treatment.
During his research career Steve worked closely with the charity developing new science and technology and Simon is now supporting its work in his role as a medical laboratory technician in the Blood Service Department at the local hospital.
Your sponsorship will be greatly appreciated by the Daisy Appeal who will use it to support their outstanding work.
