Story

Hi I’m Hasna, I’m 18 years old and hearing impaired. I was diagnosed with a bilateral sensorineural moderate hearing loss at birth and was fitted with hearing aids in both ears just before my fourth birthday.

I have just completed my A levels and hope to start university this September. My hobbies include martial arts (I am a blue belt in jujitsu) and indoor rock climbing (I am NICAS level 2 certified). I also enjoy cycling, swimming and going to the gym to keep fit.

In the coming weeks I will be travelling to Kenya for a one month expedition to take part in community projects and wildlife conservation work. I will be taking part in a five day mountain trek to climb Mount Kenya, the second highest mountain in Africa to raise funds for the National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS). The trip is fully self funded so all the money raised will be going to the NDCS.

NDCS is the leading charity for deaf children and are dedicated to providing a “world without barriers” for deaf children and young people.

Providing these people and their families with impartial information and guidance ensures they can make informed decisions about their futures. They give expert support on childhood deafness, raise awareness and campaign for deaf children’s rights, so they have the same opportunities as everyone else.

There are more than 45,000 deaf children in the UK who are vulnerable to isolation, abuse, bullying, poor self esteem and low levels of achievement. Many deaf children across the UK are underachieving in schools. Deafness is not a learning disability and there is no reason why, with the right support, the majority of deaf children should not do as well in school as their hearing peers.

95% of their work is funded by the public and every penny raised makes a difference. I believe I would not be where I am today had I not received the invaluable support from NDCS in my educational journey. Please donate generously and help make a difference to a deaf child’s future.
