Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Hey everyone! My name is Harini and I am 22.
As some of you may know, I will be volunteering for two and a half months in Costa Rica and Nicaragua from the 29th of January onwards with Raleigh International which is reputable youth and sustainable developement charity. I am very excited about this project as it allows me to make a positive contribution in those countries as well as to overcome some serious personnel chalenges!
I intend to fundraise for this expedition by running three 5k races in Richmond Park on the 27/10, 10/11 and 24/11 and by organising couple of events such as bake sales, that I will ofcourse keep you updated about :) ! I would really appreciate it if you could sponsor my races and support me in this adventure by giving a donation, even the smallest one counts! Please try to talk about this project to your friends and family.
I do understand that some of you might think that you are paying for some holidays! But I would like to clarify that my JustGiving target only covers the money that goes toward the projects! This money will mainly be used to buy materials and pay for local workers. I will ofcourse personally fund my flight tickets, as well as the last part of this expedition; which is a 250km trek. For those of you who are interested in knowing what your money will exactly serve for, please pass me your email address and i will make sure to send you a summary of the work accomplished after each project.
Please find further details about Raleigh International and my expedition below:
Raleigh works in many countries around the world such as in Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Tanzania, India to only mention a few. They provide a wonderfull opportunity for young people from diverse nationalities to make a difference by working alongside local people on many sustainable community and environmental projects.
As a venturer I would take part in an environmental project in Costa Rica where the work consists in building trails in beautiful national parks or helping with turtle conservation. In Nicaragua, which is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere, I will be participating in a community project that could help people in need to get access to clean water, safe sanitation and education.
For you to get an idea, here are some examples of the work done in 2011:
- 6 water projects that provided 855 people fresh drinking water
- 6 schools affecting 439 children
- work in 9 different national parks building 8km worth of trails
- protecting the eggs of over 1500 turtles
It is very important for Raleigh that their work will provide long term benefits for the communities, this is ensured by assessing their positive impacts by research professionels in the UK and by keeping a permanent team in the host countries.
