We build mobile cancer care units to give those with cancer extra time

Story

This spring, four of our staff are taking to new heights, as they sore through the skies for our chosen charity for 2022, ‘Hope for Tomorrow’!

Come and join us at Hope for Tomorrow's Charity Wing Walk Fun Day on 14th May 2022, at the private airfield; Rendcomb, Gloucestershire, a the WW1 grass airfield set in the heart of the beautiful Cotswold Countryside.

Hope for Tomorrow is a charity which gives cancer patients the gift of time, enabling them to continue their normal day to day routine, life and be able to spend time with those that they love, whilst receiving lifesaving treatment.

Your donations will help towards the charity funding Mobile Cancer Care Units ‘MCCUs’ (see image) which enable patients to fit their treatments into everyday life, not the other way round.

MCCUs offer many benefits:

  • They reduce patients’ travelling time.
  • They take the pressure off cancer treatment waiting lists.
  • They enable patients with more complex needs to be seen quicker within the oncology centre.
  • They make the treatment experience less stressful.
  • They save on the little things too, like having to pay for car parking fees.
  • They allow patients to gain back some independence, ensuring their treatment doesn’t dictate their lives

Once on board one of the MCCU’s, people receive the same exceptional care, just as they would in hospital. The big difference that all the patients comment on, is that there are a lot more smiles within a more relaxing, homely environment whilst receiving treatment. In fact, because of the less clinical, stress-free environment on board the MCCU, the specialist nurses say that many patients can tolerate their treatments better.

The MCCUs are deliberately designed to easily accommodate four comfortable treatment chairs, where the nurses on board can administer the same medications that a cancer patient would receive in hospital. The MCCUs combine the friendliness and comfort that the patients want, with the standard of treatment that they require.

Meet the Harbour Key staff taking on the Wing Walk Challenge!

James Wing

“Hi, I’m James! I have been working at Harbour Key since June 2020 as a Tax Manager in the advisory team; so I am now in my second year.

I am backing myself to wing-walk wholly on the basis that when I fly in a plane, I quite enjoy having the window seat and looking down at the ground, so this should only be a small step up from that, right?!

Whilst my hobbies include playing badminton, football and running, they don’t (currently) include strapping myself to the wings of a plane!

Like many people, I have seen both family members taken by but also recover from cancer; so I appreciate the hard work that goes into decreasing the chances of the former outcome, and increasing the chances of the latter outcome.

Any donation that you can give to support Hope for Tomorrow would be gratefully received and will go a long way in helping with cancer treatment for the future.”

Deborah Frost

"Hi, I’m Deborah. I work as the Accounts and Tax Manager for Harbour Key and have done so since October 2018.

As I reached my half century last year, I knew I wanted to fulfil an ambition of mine sooner rather than later; to embark on a charity challenge which will take me out of my comfort zone. Why not be strapped to the top of a plane in a boiler suit! None of my family would say I have a head for highs so they will not believe I am actually doing this until they see me on the plane taking off.

I lost both of my parents within 2 months of each other in 2019 (my Dad to cancer) so I know how important the work Cancer charities do is, and what a difference they can make to peoples’ lives. COVID has hit charities hard, so donations are needed more than ever.

Please support this worthwhile charity and Team Harbour Key. Any donation, no matter how small, can make such a difference."

Emma Mealing

“Hi, I’m Emma. After nearly 2 years at Harbour Key this year, numbers are finally pushing me to stand on top
of a plane…

After many years of horse riding and mountain biking, I now enjoy country walks with my little dachshund spending time with family and friends. Weirdly, I fear heights and taking off in a plane; why not combine these fears and throw myself in the deep end!

After losing both of my Grandparents in April 2020, it made me realise how important it is to have Charities like Hope for Tomorrow. To be able to treat patients closer to home and give them the best opportunity they can at getting better whilst spending more time with family and friends. Therefore, please donate to this great cause as I know they work so hard to help those that need it most.”

Megan Farrell

“Hi, I’m Meg. I have been working at Harbour Key since the beginning of May 2021 as the Office Administrator. Yes…. that’s usually me chasing you for information!

My background is in Fine Art but this has become just a hobby these days, alongside spending time with
friends and family and a few quirks in between.

I am a thrill seeker and enjoy any activity to get the adrenaline flowing. Oddly, I actually love heights, so
this wing walk should be great fun! (My biggest fear is actually fish, weird I know! It certainly makes looking after my 3 goldfish tricky) Combining this Wing Walk with raising money for such a well-deserved charity sounds like the perfect opportunity! I am the type of person who will put their name forward to try anything at least once!

Any donations would be very much appreciated by all, especially those who rely on the amazing treatment received on board the MCCUs.

Thank you from all at Harbour Key!
