Story

As-salamu alaykum/Hello,

My daughter Hannah Miah (10 years old), has set a challenge of completing 50km of walking in Ramadan in loving memory of her late maternal grandfather, Mohammed Aslom Miah. Hannah will walk a total of 50km during Ramadan to support Street Children  in Bangladesh. This will include walking from Oldham to Rawtenstall to her grandfather’s grave.

Hannah’s grandfather was a very well liked community activist who also supported a school and masjid in Bangladesh. He passed away last July and was extremely proud of Hannah’s charity work. A few weeks before Hannah’s grandfather passed away, he had intended to walk with his granddaughter on her next Charity campaign. Hannah was very close to her grandfather who was an inspiration and a mentor to her.

After Ramadan, Hannah will also attempt to climb mount Snowdon as part of her charity campaign for the Street Children.

Hannah’s campaign initially started after watching a video the Street Children which enabled her to appreciate how fortunate she was to have a family and home. The success of Hannah’s first campaign in 2021 inspired her to do it again this year to help the Street Children.

Hannah is hoping with her efforts she can again raise donations to rescue as many children as possible from the Streets but most importantly raising awareness of the daily struggles and hardship the children are facing on the streets all around the world.

Background Street Children Bangladesh

According to the UN, there are an estimated 600,000 street children in Bangladesh. Often they are abandoned or trafficked into the most unspeakable of situations and face the dangers and perils of street life. Children in most cases are running away from violence or abuse and end in up in Dhaka at several entry points such as the ferry terminal, bus terminal, and central train stations.

These children are then either trafficked into brothels, sex work, or assimilated into street gangs. Children are often used in syndicated begging gangs or used as drug mules.

The drug of ‘choice’ amongst street children is called Dandy which is made up of shoe polish and glue or a cocktail of pain killers and sleeping pills. Children very quickly become dependent on these drugs as a way of escape and end up selling drugs to other children to support their own addiction.

Muslim Charity has been serving humanity for over 21 years and has been rescuing street children for over 6 years; so far they have saved over 10,000 children and reunited 100s of lost children with families.

Our outreach workers are engaging with the street children at  different entry points such as the ferry terminal, bus terminal, and central train stations  Once rescued after being registered at the local police station they are taken to our transitional shelter, where the healing process begins.

Our primary objective in Muslim Charity is for all children to be with a loving family be it their own or with caring relatives if it is safe and possible. Where it is not safe for a child to be reunited with family (or no family at all) we will place the child at our children's home or partner orphanages.

No child deserves to be on the streets; you can help change this.
