My dear friend's 8 year old daughter, Neve, was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumour in summer 2020. Neve is a classmate of my son, Matteo, and a beautiful and much loved member of our community.
Neve was referred to Helen House in October 2020 when she needed more support with managing some of her challenging symptoms and in November, Neve's family discovered that Neve's cancer treatments were not working, there was no hope of a cure and she was not likely to survive more than a year.
Helen House stepped in and provided Neve and her family with a tremendous amount of love, care and support. From an incredible medical support of outreach nurses, the care team and doctors supporting the family at home with Neve, to special omelettes prepared in a specific way, exactly the way Neve liked them during her chemotherapy, to the use of a hydrotherapy pool enabling Neve to swim with all the necessary medical care and support around her, to play specialists chering Neve up, to staff offering Neve fun and games and laughter, to a team caring for Neve's family members and offering respite and helping Neve to bake a special cake for her lovely mummy on her mummy's birthday...the list goes on...
I am very close to Neve's mummy, Emily and we run together. Emily recalls one of the Helen House doctors coming to see them in intensive care when Neve was very unwell in November and she won't ever forget the doctor's words "we will scoop you up" and Emily says "that was that. They became Neve's people and Helen House became Neve's second home".
It feels very special to do this with Emily and our friends and to raise money for such an important organisation. I do not consider myself a good runner yet I feel ready for this and motivated. I will try my very best and every step of my run, I will be thinking of dear Neve and I know that every penny raised will be going to an incredible charity which provides such important care for families facing such unimaginable pain. I feel so very determined to do this and am so proud to run for Neve's Team.
Thank you so much for your support.
Without public donations and support, Helen & Douglas House can't be there for local families going through the unimaginable heartbreak of caring for and losing a terminally ill child.Helen & Douglas House supports terminally ill children and their families so that they don't have to face unimaginable heartbreak alone. To keep providing the care and love these families depend on, the hospice needs to find over £3.4 million a year.
