Story
Jack and Lucy have signed up for the Mini Great North Run! 🏃♂️ 🏃♀️ They are also wanting to support the Stroke Association so this is now a family sponsorship page!
When I was 8 my dad had a massive stroke leaving him paralysed down one side and unable to communicate. Thanks to intensive therapies, and sheer hard work and determination on his part, he regained some speech and learnt to walk again with feeling in only one leg! He is a total inspiration.
Pre-stroke dad was a keen climber and mountaineer and we would often be out on the fells as a family. Running is something that never came easily to me so taking on The Great North Run to mark 30 years since dad had his stroke was a huge deal for me.
Having trained for the run in 2019 I then did my back in (picking up a sock would you believe?!) a week before the event. I deferred my place but due to Covid19 the event was cancelled the following year. So on September 13th 2020 I ran the half marathon distance along the banks of The Tyne and completed the virtual GNR in 2hours 35mins. It was a brilliant morning with John, Jack, Lucy, mum and dad there to cheer me on and provide jelly babies!
2021 saw the return of the GNR but it wasn't to be for me - another deferral due to the combined factors of a dodgey Achilles and my fears around covid.
So... perhaps 2022 will be the year that I actually manage to do the Great North Run. I have recently started training and there have already been some pretty gruelling early morning runs before work but I am determined to be ready for September!
It only makes sense to put myself through all of this in order to raise money for The Stroke Association - if the money I raise goes to research or care which can stop someone else going through what our family went through then BRING IT ON!
Please give what you can! Thank you for your support.
