Story
Hi there,
Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my page and I hope you will sponsor me on this fantastic challenge to cycle from London to Brussels...it's still debateable whether my legs will make it! I am thrilled to be undertaking the 100 Cyclists challenge on the behalf of the Wellington Appeal with every £1 raised being split between two very worthwhile charities - Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) and the British Red Cross.
I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when I was eight years old and my first question was 'why me?'. This is a question that is still asked by the 350,000 people in the UK living with type 1, including over 25,000 children, and a question we are getting closer to the answer of every day.
Type 1 diabetes remains an ‘invisible condition’, whilst I am the first to say I am fine it takes a huge amount of work to make sure that is the case. Multiple daily injections or pump infusions, regular finger prick blood tests and the constant calculations inside your head to work out how your days actvities and emotions are affecting your blood sugar, how many carbohydrates are in your food and what that means for the amount of insulin you are going to inject. So very few people are aware of the burden of that work that rests on the parents and children alike. I truly believe that no child, parent or friend should have that load and I now spend every working day for JDRF to raise the money to fund the research making sure that we are creating a future without that burden. A future without type 1 diabetes.
It has been a pleasure working with the Wellington Appeal and I hope you will join me in supporting them!
Many, many thanks for all your support,
Hannah
