Story
Unfortunately in 2019 I lost my big cousin to mental health. Jen was only 25 years old and the impact of her loss on my incredible family is huge. She was an amazingly beautiful, funny and kind woman who would always light up a room. To know Jen was a privilege. She was the most driven and hardworking person, always taking on new endeavours; this was such an admirable trait. Jen showed so much love and passion for everything she did, all while sadly struggling with her own battles. The strength Jen showed while still putting her all into caring for her family and friends is nothing short of amazing.
Mental health doesn’t discriminate and anyone can develop a mental health problem in their lifetime. In England, 1 in 4 people will experience a mental health problem of some kind each year. Devastatingly, since 2018 the reported suicide rate is increasing. However, only 1 in 8 adults with a mental health problem are currently getting any kind of treatment. Access to mental health support and treatment isn’t a privilege, it’s a basic right. Although the conversation about mental health has massively opened up and it is becoming a safer space to reach out, so much more still has to be done in the fight for mental health. Those affected by a mental health problem deserve to feel listened to and confident that they will receive the correct support. I want to help in the fight to prevent further tragedies.
Mind provides advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. They aim to improve services, raise awareness, and promote understanding. They pledge not to give up until the hundreds and thousands of people experiencing a mental health problem get support and respect. I have great admiration for this important charity, and I finally want to do something bold to support them.
I have decided to take the plunge (literally) and do something crazy to raise money for Mind…a skydive on 18th March 2023.. This might be the scariest thing I will ever do but I know Jen would be so proud of me and I’ll be safe in the knowledge that it’s all for an incredible cause!
Any shares and donations, no matter how big or small, would be greatly appreciated! 🦋
