Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In August this year l will be swimming across the English Channel from Dover to France. There are six of us attempting to complete this epic swim as a relay team and we're doing so in order to help transform the lives of people with life changing spinal cord injuries.
To make this challenge even harder.. wet suits are not allowed for official channel swims so i'll be braving cold salty water, jellyfish and congested shipping lanes with just a costume and swim hat for protection!
Our official crossing is in August, but I began preparing for this insane challenge last November. I've spent countless hours in the pool and in February started training outdoors in cold water to kick start the acclimatisation process. Since May I've been swimming in the sea and in June I completed my qualifying swim; 2 hours of front crawl in Dover bay in 14.5 degree water.
On the day, we’ll set off from Dover beach at about 2am and swim in relay until one of us scrambles, crawls or collapses onto the beach in France. During the relay each of us will give everything we have for our one hour stint before swapping in rotation with the next teammate. We have a solid support team in the form of our boat pilot and team leader who’ll be helping us to safely navigate the tides, wildlife and cargo & passenger ships!
As difficult as this swim is going to be, the challenges we will face are a drop in the ocean compared to living with the impact of an incurable spinal cord injury. Aspire provide INVALUABLE help and support for people with spinal cord injuries with everything from physiotherapy to adaptive living. Any donations will be received with eternal love and thanks!
